Background

The Mina Abdullah refinery was first built in 1958 by the American Independent Oil Company. It was at that time a simple refinery that contained one crude oil distillation unit with a capacity of approximately 30,000 bpd. Following several expansion projects between 1962-1967 its refining capacity rose to approximately 145,000 bpd. Upon completion of the Clean Fuels Project refining capacity will go up to 400,000 barrels a day.

Project status

July 2015: Consolidated Contracting Company (CCC) is awarded a $500 million subcontract by Petrofac for the construction of units 111, 112, 113 and 216.

KNPC CEO announces project progress currently at 27 per cent.

Project scope

The scope of the scheme involves building the Crude Distillation Unit MAB Unit 111, Atmospheric Residue Desulphurisation (ARDS) Unit MAB Units 112/212,   Hydrocracker Unit (HCR) MAB Unit 114 & MAB Unit 214, Diesel Hydrotreating (DHT) Unit MAB Unit 116 & MAB Unit 216, Continuous Catalytic Reformer (CCR) MAB Unit 127, Naphtha Hydrotreater (NHT) Unit (23500 BPSD) MAB Units 117, Underground Piping MAB Unit 179, Vacuum Rerun (VR) Unit MAB Unit 213 and DHT Flare MAB Unit 249.
