Trelleborg’s Firestop in action

Firestop™ is a passive fire protection material used to protect personnel and equipment by minimizing fire escalation. This provides time to evacuate people, close down critical equipment and for responders to gain control of a fire

Trelleborg's offshore operation launches its next-generation Firestop material. The newly developed fire-resistant material is thinner and lighter than any current passive fire protection materials available to the market.

Ben Erik Jansen, Business Development director with Trelleborg’s offshore operation based in Norway states: "For decades Trelleborg has supplied the oil and gas market with fire protection solutions based on our Firestop technology, a rubber-based compound that can withstand severe fire scenarios.

"We developed the next-generation Firestop material at our in-house laboratory in Norway. Based on proven technology, the material is lighter and thinner than our first generation material. The newly formulated compound enables us to reduce both costs and lead time for our customers. Since the new material can easily be molded and extruded in all shapes and profiles, we intend to identify new applications for the material in other markets."

In addition to developing the new material, an internal investment programme was initiated to test and certify all existing Firestop applications for the next generation Firestop material.

Firestop is a passive fire protection material used to protect personnel and equipment by minimising fire escalation. This provides time to evacuate people, close down critical equipment and for responders to gain control of a fire.

The certified rubber-based material protects structures from exceeding critical temperature limits.

The dampening, noise reducing flexible nature of Firestop can also protect equipment from vibrations, collisions, explosions and even earthquakes.

Protecting on-site equipment and structures allows more time to evacuate personnel in the event of an accident, as well as giving fire services valuable time to control the situation.

Trelleborg’s FireStop material is able to significantly delay the escalation in temperature in steel structures and can be used in various topside applications to safeguard assets from fire, explosions, collisions and vibrations. Trelleborg’s flexible piping system, Elastopipe is made of synthetic rubber and is approved for offshore deluge systems. This robust, low-maintenance solution requires no welding during installation and is available in a fire-resistant (FR) variation for freshwater and seawater applications, as well as a fire and oil resistant (FOR) versions for harsh environments involving hydrocarbons, additives, solvents, hydrogen sulphide and acids.

Furthermore, Trelleborg’s hand-mounted FireNut system delivers powerful protection for bolted connections against jet and hydrocarbon fires for up to two hours, significantly prolonging the structural integrity of worksite structures in critical situations.

Trelleborg Offshore is a leading engineering company that specialises in the development of advanced high-integrity polymer and syntactic foam solutions to seal and protect critical applications, optimising performance in harsh marine environments.

Its cutting-edge innovations are designed to optimise the quality, safety and efficiency of clients’ operations across all segments of the oil and gas industry in a sustainable manner.
